HIGHLAND GREEN FARM – MONROE COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA

This classic American farm lies at the foot of a mountain, affording a sweeping 50-mile, 180-degree panoramic view of the rural countryside to the east and north. A two-story farmhouse and a rustic cabin, two large ponds fed by natural springs, a barn, and 100+/- acres of farmland complete the picturesque scene.

The postcard-perfect village of Union, the seat of Monroe County, is only an easy three mile drive away, where groceries, restaurants, banking, medical and dental services are available, along with veterinary services. The popular Cheese and More shop, run by local Mennonites, is in nearby Gap Mills. The town of Lewisburg, known for its lively arts scene, restaurants and shopping, is 20 minutes to the north. The world famous 6000-acre Greenbrier resort is only 30 minutes away. The Greenbrier Valley Airport offers daily connecting flights to Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. Roanoke, Virginia, is a 90-minute drive, and Washington is 5 hours.

The 100-acre fenced farm, once an operating dairy, currently supports a herd of cattle, but is also suitable for horses or sheep. The main farmhouse was constructed in 1992 and has been recently renovated. The cabin sits high on a knoll at the top of the property and can be used as a guest or tenant house.

Main Residence

The two-story farmhouse features a charming front porch overlooking a pond with fish and turtles, and popular with passing flocks of ducks and geese, along with great blue heron. The first floor has an eat-in kitchen, a living room with a gas fireplace, a parlour (which would also make a great office or den),and a new master bedroom and bath with walk in closet. In addition, the master suite has a sunroom which could easily function as an artist’s studio. The second floor has two large bedrooms with plenty of closet space, and two bathrooms retrofitted with vintage pedestal sinks that came from the Greenbrier resort.

Guest Cabin

The rustic log-and-wood guesthouse is a short drive up a winding gravel road that leads from the farmhouse. Built on the site of a family picnic shelter, the cabin has a large great room with exposed hand-hewn beams, a fireplace with a hewn log mantel, plenty of windows that show off the amazing view of surrounding farms and distant mountaintops, two large bedrooms and two bathrooms.

Farm

The 100-acre gently rolling farmland is fenced and sections of cross-fencing can be added to permit rotational grazing, or planting part of the farm in crops. The classic red barn has a metal roof and a large hayloft running its entire length. It can be used as both a workshop and a place to shelter tractors and farm equipment.   The two spring-fed ponds and a watering trough provide ample water for livestock and wildlife alike.  Both ponds are also stocked with fish and great places to throw in a fishing line.

View

Perhaps the single most impressive feature of this property is its spectacular view of the surrounding countryside. The sweeping panorama takes in Cold Knob in northern Greenbrier County and Peters Mountain in southern Monroe County, where the Eastern Continental Divide demarcates the watersheds of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Peters Mountain also represents the border between West Virginia and neighboring Virginia. At night the unspoiled view is moonlight, stars and a few twinkling lights from the town of Union.

Local Attractions

The State Fair of West Virginia, a weeklong agricultural and cultural expo with carnival games and plenty of rides for the kids, is held annually in mid-August in nearby Fairlea.

Two ski resorts – Snowshoe in Pocahontas County and Winterplace in Raleigh County – are a 2-hour drive from the farm.

The Greenbrier resort features an ever-expanding schedule of public events, including the Greenbrier Classic, a nationally televised PGA tournament held in early July, with the extra bonus of evening concerts with headliners like Jimmy Buffett, Brad Paisley, Aerosmith, Jon Bon Jovi, Carrie Underwood and Maroon Five. The resort recently opened a new $30 million training facility for the New Orleans Saints, and the football team’s practice sessions in late July and early August are open to the public. A 2500-seat tennis stadium to host professional matches is currently in the planning stage.

And speaking of sporting events, NCAA football and basketball games are just a scenic 1½-hour drive away at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. 65,000-seat Lane Stadium is truly a sight to behold on game days.
